Aunts Design Iceland is an authentic collection line, where the Icelandic wool sweater pattern is used as a base.
The brand was invented by the aunts Kolbrún (Kolla) and Kristín in the fall of 2009, the first items on the market were a quality cotton T-shirt, with the pattern printed on - and a tea/coffee mug with the same pattern printed on. The first pattern they used, were originated from an old sweater, owned by Kolla's father-in-law, which he got as a present in the 60's.
The Icelandic wool sweater pattern is actually not so old design, it is believed that Auður Laxness, the wife of Halldór Laxness - the Nobel prize winner author from Iceland, knitted the first sweater in late 40's or early 50's. The pattern is unique and has earned world wide reputation and connection with the Icelandic wool sweater.
The T-shirt is thought to be an alternative, for people to wear in warm weather and also for those who cant stand the itchy feeling of the Icelandic wool.
The aunts started a company, to operate their brand - the company's name is Karra ehf. - Karra was the equipment used to camb the wool - before it was able to spin it to a thread.
